Running is a low-maintenance sport and you don’t have to buy fancy gear to start exercising. But what running essentials do you need for your jog? We tell you what running gear you need as a beginner to tackle your miles.
Wear the right running clothes
There are so many reasons why you probably want to start running. Of course you can put on your old tracksuit bottoms and your favourite tawny t-shirt, but we advise you to wear these during your well-deserved dates with Netflix. Running in the right running clothes makes exercising a lot more fun and comfortable plus they enable you to perform to your best. The right running clothes are a good investment:

Now you know why wearing the right running clothes is a must. But what clothes do you actually need? Chances are you can’t see the wood for the trees, but we’ll tell you what running clothes essentials you need so you can get the most out of your workout.
#1 Running shoes
Worn or ill-fitting shoes are your recipe for injuries and you have to resist the lure of your favourite trainers. You can do it! ;) The best investment you can make is to treat yourself to a great pair of running shoes. Running shoes protect your feet when pounding over the pavement. They cushion the shocks and thus protect your joints. It is essential to know what running shoes you need before you race off for your first training.
#2 Running socks
When you go out for your run, please keep your cute socks in their drawer. Regular socks will give you blisters and smelly feet. If you do insist on wearing your regular socks; the moisture won’t get wicked away if you sweat or accidentally step in a puddle. Running socks are designed to reduce blisters, they wick away moisture and keep you and your feet more comfortable. Most running socks gently compress your muscles. That may sound a bit scary, but it really isn’t. Muscle compression improves blood circulation, reduces tiredness and keeps you running further. Brilliant!
#3 Running shirt
Running shirts are designed to keep your body temperature steady. They also keep your skin dry regardless of the intensity of your run. Unlike regular cotton shirts, running shirts absorb moisture and chill your skin quickly so you don’t overheat. It depends on your preference whether you choose a loose or a tight running shirt. It doesn’t matter what you choose: just make sure that your running shirt is made of wicking material to regulate your body temp.
#4 Running trousers
Running trousers, or running tights, offer several great benefits: they are comfortable to wear, keep you warm in the winter and offer muscle compression. The latter may even improve results from your exercise! It is essential that you choose a pair of running tights that feel like a second skin. You don’t want them to be too loose, since you won’t get any benefits from muscle compression. Your running trousers should not be so tight that they restrict movement. It is best to choose a pair that is specifically designed for running if you don’t want to risk any seams rubbing in uncomfortable places.
#5 Running jacket
A running jacket is a staple for your running wardrobe. Okay, not when it’s very hot outside, but on windy and cool days a running jacket is a bare necessity. A running jacket protects you from rain, wind and cold. Running is a lot more fun when you feel as warm and comfy as possible throughout your workout!
#6 Sports bra
Sports bras may not be the most appealing garment you’ve ever worn, but trust us: you will love them! Not many things are as annoying as bouncing breasts during your workout and not wearing a sports bra can lead to breast pain and discomfort. You don’t want your puppies to affect your sports performances, right?! When choosing your sports bra, make sure it’s composed of a fabric that wicks away moisture. Since you really do not want any friction or unpleasant rubbing, your sports bra must also have as few seams as possible and feature wide straps. Last, but not least, a sports bra should always fit tight enough to limit the movement of your chest as much as possible.
#7 Sports watch
With a sports watch, you can track your mileage and heart rate. It is also great for timing your runs, staying in pace and using the GPS to track your route. Some sports watches are even programmable, so you can keep up with your statistics and keep up your motivation.
#8 Water bottles
When you’re totally into it and you run for more than 30 minutes, it’s clever to drink water to stay hydrated. You probably won’t have any access to water on your running routes, so we advise you to carry your fluids with you. All you need is a water bottle that you can use on the go!
#9 Sunscreen
When you’re outdoors, it is clever to protect your skin from the sun. We recommend that you remove all makeup and apply a nice thick layer of sunscreen about 30 minutes before your workout. But why should you wear sunscreen when you’re running? Sunscreen protects your skin from harmful UV Rays and thus reduces the risk of getting skin cancer. Also, using sunscreen prevents your skin from getting sunburn. Running keeps your mind and body healthy, sunscreen keeps your skin healthy.
