The chunky Dr. Martens boots have been on-trend for years. Goths and harbour workers used to wear them, but these days they are a true wardrobe staple. You can wear them with jeans, but Dr. Martens also add a cool twist to the Little Black Dress. Dr. Martens have countless benefits, but there’s also one downside: breaking in comes close to torture. Nobody will deny your boots will give you blisters. Here are some tips on how to prevent yourself from suffering.

Buy one size up

Everybody knows buying your shoes too small is not a good idea. Breaking in shoes can be bad, but breaking them in while they’re too small is worse. Always buy your Dr. Martens one size up than you usually wear.

Wear thick socks

Today socks in all kinds of colours and patterns are on the market, but sports socks are the best choice when breaking in your Docs. Yes, we’re talking those thick, white, knitted socks lots of people consider a fashion faux-pas! Luckily you’ll only have to wear them during your breaking-in time. After that you can put on those fancy socks again.

Tip: never wear no-show socks together with your Dr. Martens if you’d like to avoid one of the biggest socks-annoyances.

Blister plasters

You usually use blister plasters when your blisters become very painful, but when it comes to Dr. Martens it’s a good idea to use blister plasters as prevention. Dr. Martens boots give blisters on the heels to most people, but ask yourself where your other shoes gave you blisters. This way you can protect your pressure points.

Stuff them with wet cloths

Stuffing your Dr. Martens with wet cloths does miracles. With this technique, you stretch your shoes a bit, which smoothens the fitting. If you don’t like getting your feet wet, you can always drop your Dr. Martens off at the shoemaker. He or she has a machine that’ll stretch them for you.

Short distances

Okay, you weren’t planning on running a marathon on your Dr. Martens, but an afternoon of shopping is not too much to ask. While you’re breaking in your Dr. Martens boots, you may want to wear a pair of trainers if you plan to do a lot of walking. You’ll probably want to wear your Dr. Martens around the house during this phase.

Accept

Like your nan used to say: ‘You have to suffer for beauty.’ And honestly, when it comes down to a brand new pair of Dr. Martens there’s not much you can do, but to accept they give you blisters. There is a silver lining. When broken in, you’ll never want to take off your Docs again due to the air-cushioned sole that’s mingled with the leather. Dr. Martens are indestructible and will last a lifetime.
