It’s one of the most iconic brands in the world when it comes to comfortable footwear: Ugg. The brand has many influential celebrities as fans, like Oprah Winfrey. And you. :) And not without reason, because Ugg shoes are the epitome of casual luxury. Uggs are fluffy, comfy, and your trusty foot soldiers. You’ve probably had your Ugg shoes for months, or even years, now. Your beloved fluffy shoes have been by your side at every comfortable moment of your life, but water stains and dirt make your darlings look a bit worse. What’s a girl to do? No Ugg-devotee would want to ruin their favourite shoes, but we’ve got you covered! We answer the burning question ‘can you put Uggs in the washing machine’, and give you easy-to-follow step-by-step cleaning tips.

Can you put Uggs in the washing machine?

And the answer is… (drums please!) No! You can not put Uggs in the washing machine. Never ever! It might be tempting to pop ‘em in the washer, but washing machines are a nightmare for shoes. They are brutal and cause all sorts of damage to your delicate boots. Ugg uses the softest and most delicate sheepskin and suede, and the shoes need tender, love and care to keep them clean. Here are some easy-to-follow steps to wash your Ugg shoes by hand and have them rejuvenated.

Before you start cleaning your Uggs, keep the following at hand.

  • Bowl
  • An old toothbrush or nailbrush
  • A clean toothbrush or nailbrush
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Clean towel or cloth
  • A suede brush

#1 Wipe away excess mud and dirt

Before you start cleaning your Uggs, you have to make sure that they’re dry. Even the excess mud and dirt have to be dry. To knock off mud, simply tap the shoes together or use an old nailbrush to remove stuck-on dirt. Aim for getting as much dirt off as possible.

#2 Make soapy water

Fill a bowl, a pan or a bucket with lukewarm water and a tiny drop of mild laundry detergent. Mix until you get soapy water.

#3 Wash the soles

Take your old toothbrush or nailbrush and dip it into the soapy water. Now gently scrub the soles and use a soft cloth to dry the soles.

#4 Wash the upper

Now it’s time to use a clean towel or cloth. Place one hand in the boot for easy handling and soak the cloth in the water. Do not, and we repeat, do not soak your Uggs! Now gently wipe the surface and seams, but make sure you don’t scrub. Ugg boots are made from delicate sheepskin and stain easily. You can use an old toothbrush to clean all the seams effectively, but it’s no big deal if you don’t have one. Carefully remove the excess detergent.

#5 Dry

Carefully blot your Uggs dry. Put your shoes in a dry, room-temperature spot and avoid direct sunlight. Let your shoes sit here until they’re completely dry. Your babies will be as good as new!

#6 Use a suede brush

A suede brush is a great maintenance product for your shoes. Use a suede brush to lightly buff off any residue.

How to clean the inside of your Ugg boots

If you avoid wearing socks and ensure that your feet are clean before you put on your Ugg boots, the inside should stay clean and free of nasty odours. But what if the inside of your Uggs smells? The bad news is that smelly insoles are a sign of bacterial growth in your Uggs. The good news is that there’s plenty you can do to get your Uggs smelling fresh.

 #1 Scrub the interior

Lightly dampen a cloth and gently scrub the interior. Soap can strip the wool of its lanolin, so it’s best to use plain water.

#2 Let the Uggs dry

Store your boots in a dark, dry and well-ventilated area, and let them sit for 24-48 hours. Make sure they’re completely dry before you put them on.

If the inside is still dirty

If the inside of your Uggs is still dirty, apply mild detergent (for wool) to a damp cloth and repeat step #1.

#3 Remove residue

Use a clean cloth to remove any soap residue. Done? Repeat step #2.

#4 Get rid of odours

Get rid of bad smelling odours by sprinkling the inside of your Ugg shoes with baking soda. Leave them overnight. In the morning, gently vacuum the inside to empty out the baking soda.
