You probably want to wear your favourite pair of jeans everyday, but the more you wear your denims, the more likely they’ll end up in your laundry basket. However, there’s only one rule for jeans: don’t wash your jeans too often if you want to maintain the quality and fit. Of course, you don’t wish to be known as ‘the one with the musty jeans’, so we collected five tips on how to never wash jeans and avoid nasty smells.

Let your jeans get some airing outside

The fresh outside air can do lots of good for the nasty smells. Hang them on your clothesline, and you’ll notice a reduction in smell. Just make sure you turn your jeans inside out before hanging them on your clothesline. The sunlight can cause fading of the colours. To prevent nasty smells in the future, it’s best to air your jeans outside after wearing them twice.

Steam your jeans in the bathroom

Is it raining outside, and you’d like to remove the nasty smell without having to put them in your washing machine? Just take a nice hot shower with the door closed and hang your jeans in the same space. That way you steam your jeans clean. With a bit of luck, your jeans will smell like your favourite shower gel after you’re done.

Put your jeans in the freezer

Denim fans swear by putting their jeans in the freezer overnight. The freezing cold kills most bacteria and dead skin cells, just like an extremely hot wash does. Since that’s anything but friendly for your jeans, the freezer method is proven to be a good alternative.

Fold your jeans, put them in a freezer bag or old pillowcase and throw them in the freezer for the night. The next day your jeans will be as good as new without having been in your washing machine. Just make sure you don’t stuff your jeans between your frozen foods since they may have a strong smell.

Use a refreshing clothing spray

You get up early in the morning only to find out your jeans don’t smell as fresh as you’d like, but you insist on wearing them anyway. A refreshing clothing spray is the solution for rapidly removing nasty smells. Spray your jeans and let them soak for fifteen minutes. Meanwhile, you have time to take a shower, put on your makeup, and have breakfast. Unfortunately using clothing spray is not a long-term solution; the spray only covers nasty smells but doesn’t remove bacteria and dead skin cells.

Handwash your jeans

Not washing your jeans can be quite a challenge. Although the tips given above are great solutions, sometimes you just like the idea of having freshly laundered jeans. Before you head to your washing machine, there’s a good alternative. Use the old-fashioned way of handwashing your jeans. Make sure you use lukewarm water and add mild soap to your soapy water. Don’t squeeze out your jeans too much and let them dry laying down. As a result, your jeans will maintain their natural fit, and the damage of the washing is brought down to a minimum.

If nothing works and you would LOVE to wash your jeans

If all the tricks of removing nasty smells don’t work, there’s only one solution: put your jeans in your washing machine. Although we don’t recommend washing them too often, it can be necessary every once in a while. Do you have a case of ‘my jeans smell horrible’, then it might be a good idea to launder your jeans. Just use these tips.

  • Empty all pockets and close all zips
  • Turn your jeans inside out before throwing them in the drum
  • Use a mild detergent for jeans
  • Don’t use any fabric softener
  • Make sure the drum is not too full
  • Wash your jeans at 30 degrees maximum
  • NEVER throw your jeans in the dryer, but let them dry lying down
