It could happen to anyone: finding your newly bought woollen jumper in your laundry machine, but then six times smaller. With a little bit of luck, your upper arm fits into this small size, and your jumper ends up in the back of your closet, or worse, your bin. What a shame! With this guide, you recover your wool jumper to live happily ever after.
How to unshrink your jumper
It’s simple: it takes just a few steps you transform your woollen jumper to its original size. You only need:
- A bucket
- Baby shampoo or conditioner
- Water
- Towel
- Make soapy water
First, you fill your bucket with lukewarm water. Make sure the water is not too cold or too hot to get the best results. Add a dollop of baby shampoo or conditioner and stir to get your soapy water.
Soak the shrunken wool jumper
Put your shrunken jumper in the soapy water and let it soak for at least thirty minutes. Be sure your jumper is fully underwater, so the conditioner or baby shampoo can fully penetrate the fabric fibres of your woollen jumper.
Don’t rinse or wring your wool jumper
Please don’t rinse your jumper after you finish soaking your shrunken jumper in the soapy water. You want the shampoo or conditioner to stay in the fabric fibre to keep your jumper as flexible as possible. Wringing the jumper is a bad idea as well. Your jumper will lose its natural fit when you wring it. It’s best to keep your jumper as wet as possible.
Stretch wool jumper
Lay the wet jumper on a dry towel and gently stretch it by pulling the edges. After this, you can put your shrunken jumper on a hanger and there you go, your woollen jumper is good as new.
Tip: What if your shrunken woollen jumper shrinks after you’ve hung it? Lay your wet jumper dry on a towel and place a couple of heavy items on the edges.
