We’ve all been there: waking up at 7AM and seeing a frizz ball reflected in the mirror. Desperately trying to cram your hair into a bun after applying half a bottle of dry shampoo and serum is just not what you want early in the morning. It may sound dramatic, but a bad hair day can seriously ruin your day. You feel slightly deflated every time you catch a glimpse of yourself and that doesn’t do your self-esteem any good. To save you from any future disasters, we have put together 9 tips to avoid a bad hair day and keeping you looking your best at all times.

#1 Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Most duvet covers come with a matching cotton pillowcase. Although this looks lovely, the cotton version doesn’t do anything for the condition of your hair. A silk pillowcase is a much better idea if you want to avoid bad hair days. Cotton absorbs moisture, while silk leaves that hydration where it belongs: in your hair. When you sleep on a silk pillowcase, your hair takes in oils. Adios split ends and tangles! Satin pillowcases do wonders whether your hair is kinky, wavy, curly or straight.

#2 Invest in a great hairbrush

A good hairbrush is half to work if you want to avoid bad hair days. Using the same hairbrush as the rest of your family is not a clever idea. Every hair type demands a different hairbrush. When you use the right hairbrush for your hair type, your hair will be less likely to snag. Never brush wet hair, but wait until your manes are towel dry.

#3 Don’t wash your hair too often or too little

There are great differences of opinion of how often you should wash your hair. Some people really love the no-poo method, the water-only hair washing routine, while others love washing their hair every day. Hairdressers advise something in between: washing your hair 2 to 3 times a week should be best for your hair’s condition. How many times a week you wash your hair depends on your hair type and lifestyle. People who exercise regularly are more likely to wash their hair often compared to the lucky ones who have thick, strong curls.

#4 Use dry shampoo

Luckily dry shampoo is one of your bathroom cabinet’s essentials. Dry shampoo adds volume and reduces the risk of getting oily hair. Dry shampoo postpones a hair wash and prevents you from bad hair days. Are you looking for a less chemical version? Then use talcum powder; this works equally, but is skin-friendlier.

#5 Always rinse with cold water

After washing hair, it’s best to give it a cold water rinse. This may not feel very comfortable after your nice warm shower, but hot water causes your hair to become less shiny. Coldwater keeps your hair looking polished, and you no longer have to be afraid of bad hair days. Another plus: your blood circulation benefits from a 30 seconds cold rinse.

#6 Don’t touch your hair

We all know this, and yet it’s hard. Fiddling with hair is usually unnoticed or maybe you want to keep your strands away from your face. The more you touch your hair, the dirtier it gets, unfortunately. Just think of all the bacteria on your hands that end up in your hair and cause an oily hairdo. Try to keep your hands off your hair and use hairclips to keep your strands away from your face.

#7 Use the correct care products

Using the right care products is essential if you want to avoid bad hair days. Every hair structure and hair condition needs its own products. If your hair gets oily quickly, it’s never clever to use an overload of nourishing products. They make your hair even oilier since your hair can’t absorb the nourishing care. This goes for dry hair as well: a care product that adds volume or dandruff shampoo won’t do much good for the condition of your hair.

#8 Keep a spray bottle by your dresser

When you wake up to hair that’s completely lost its shape, a spray bottle full of water will help you out in a pinch. Simply spritz and blow dry on low heat. It only takes a couple of minutes and does wonders in reshaping your locks.

#9 Get regular trims

It might sound kind of dull, but getting your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks really prevents you from having bad hair days. Even if you spend hours styling your hair, dry and split ends will always look, well ehm, horrible. And that’s the best reason to get them snipped of regularly! Split ends can keep on splitting up the hair shaft making your hair look brittle. That’s why it’s essential to get rid of them as soon as possible. It’s all about preventative maintenance baby!

#10 Find your go-to bad hair day hairstyle

Find your perfect super quick and super easy look that you can pull out when you need to. You need a style that’s simple and works every time, whether that’s the perfect messy bun or straightening your hair quickly. It all depends on your hair type and cut, but doing some research will take you a long way. You’re bound to find a style that works for you.

#11 Learn how to braid

If these tips don’t work and you still wake up with a bad hair day, then there’s one solution: learn how to braid. Braids are perfect for hiding a multitude of sins and they are easy to do while you look like you’ve made a major effort.
