Every parent knows that children grow like crazy. They often need a completely new wardrobe, and we have not even mentioned the collection of shoes that your child has collected over the years. Most of these shoes are (way) too small and it’s time to buy a new pair. But what is your child’s shoe size? Buying the right size is essential for their development and you, as a parent, don’t want your tiny one to walk around on shoes that are too big or too small. The right size advice is essential, especially when you buy a pair of children’s shoes on the internet. With these tips you calculate the right shoe size for your minime. Even at home!

How do I measure my child’s shoe size?

The first step into measuring your child’s shoe size is to know the length of the foot. It may seem difficult, but you can do this. It starts with preparation. To determine the length of the foot of your child, you need:

  • Piece of white paper
  • Ruler or measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Your child, of course!

Do you have all necessities within hand-reach? Let’s start! Make sure your child’s foot properly stands on the piece of paper. It’s best to stand up straight. Putting your child up against the wall or door can help. If your tiny one is too little to stand up straight, he or she can sit on your lap and press the piece of paper against the foot. Is your child standing up straight and is the foot standing properly on the paper? Then grab your pencil and mark the end of the heel and the end of the biggest toe. Take your ruler and measure the distance between the two marks. Now you know the length of the foot. Repeat this step with the other foot. Step 1 of determining the right shoe size is now completed!

The older your child is, the easier measuring the length of the foot becomes. But it’s so important to buy the right size for little ones. They can’t tell if the shoe fits nicely. Plus the right shoe size is essential for utilizing the footplate to its fullest potential.

Tips for buying the right shoes for your child

Tip 1: Besides the right shoe size, there are other things you have to keep in mind when you buy a pair of children’s shoes. Everyone, children included, has different foot shapes. During the child’s growth phase, feet are often narrow and slim. This is not always the case though. Take a good look at your child’s foot shape and what shoe will fit best. In case your child has wide feet or high insteps, please don’t buy shoes that have a narrow fit. These are very uncomfortable for your child and can hinder the walking-development. Shoes made of soft materials and that have laces or Velcro are perfect since you can adjust the fit.

Tip 2: When your child has just learned to walk, it’s essential to pay extra attention to picking out the right shoes. A shoe with a flexible sole is very suitable for babies who are ready to explore the world. Flex soles are soft and enable your child to roll off the feet correctly. And it stimulates the sense of good balance and posture. Once your child has mastered walking, you can switch to a regular sole.

Tip 3: Not only the right fit and right size cause healthy feet. The right material plays a part as well. Leather children’s shoes are breathable and keep little feet healthy. Plus it reduces the risk of getting sweaty feet, fungal and other infections!
