Do you first make a loop or skip through? Left over right or right over left? A single knot or a double one? Chances are your knowledge on tying shoelaces has become less, and you just automatically tie your laces. Once, it seems decades ago, you received a ‘tie your shoelace diploma’, and you were taught to firmly tie your laces using big loops. Nothing is more annoying than shoelaces going loose, so we give you 3 tips to never get loose shoelaces again.

1.           Tie your shoelaces reversed

You probably have no idea what we mean by tying reversed. The bottom line is that almost everyone ties the shoelaces the same way and it seems this is the weak way as well.. By tying in reverse, you use the stronger variation that keeps your laces tied.

How do you do that? Start with a simple knot in the laces and then turn one lace into a loop. This is probably what you’ve been doing for years. Then take the other lace, but instead of going over the loop, you go under. Last but not least, you pull the knot the way you’re used to. To make this easier, the video below can help you.

2.           Make your laces rough

Round laces tend to be smooth and are known to get loose quickly. Roughening up the laces can make a big difference. Use a sharp knife or a pair of scissors. Gently rub the sharp edge over the laces, but make sure you don’t push it too far. Be gentle, because your laces can break if you damage your laces while roughening. If you think this is too much fuss, you can also buy a pair of flat shoelaces. These are more coarse and are less likely to become untied.

3.           Tying laces to relieve foot problems

Your shoelace to get loose quickly has everything to do with the pressure your feet give during walking. Your laces will become untied if there is too much pressure on the shoelace. Especially people with foot problems recognise this issue. It may help to tie your laces a certain way so you relieve your foot. For every complaint, there’s a different way of tying your shoelaces more firmly.
