Why does Christmas Jumper Day take place every year?

It seems like we’ve been wearing Christmas jumpers for decades, but nothing could be further from the truth. Christmas Jumper Day first took place in 2012 and has been running every year since. It’s an annual event organised by children’s rights charity Save the Children to raise money to help children around the world build a better future. On Christmas Jumper Day, every parent, child, and teacher is encouraged to bring their holiday spirit and a £1 donation through the school gates in the form of their favourite Christmas jumper. The rule is: there are no rules! You can buy a new Christmas jumper, or wear one that you already own, or decorate a plain knitted jumper with festive decorations. If you’re up to it, you can even knit one yourself!

What is Christmas Jumper Day?

Christmas jumpers are fun and full of happiness. They may not be the most fashionable jumpers out there, but they definitely cheer you up, and that’s what they are all about. That’s why Christmas Jumper Day encourages everyone to wear one: for everyone to see the world as we hope our children do: a colourful place with lots of things to discover, full of magic and happiness.

Sadly, for some children, the world doesn’t feel like a magical, happy place they wish to discover. At Christmas time, this world can even feel worse as the pressure to be happy and jolly, and spending time with your loved ones gets heavier. Some people, both children and adults, struggle to find magic and happiness due to factors out of their control. And that’s when the fundraiser Save the Children’s Christmas Jumper Day UK sweeps in! By donating £1 (if you’re in school) or £2, you help children around the world build a better future.

All the money raised goes towards helping children who are living in poverty. The Save the Children charity helps to provide food, shelter and education for these children. It’s all about giving these kids a better quality of life!
