Every woman uses makeup to try to make a better version of herself. Some have a drawer full of all sorts of makeup, and others own only a few products. No matter how much makeup you have lingering around, it all comes down to having the correct products and how you use them. This is a lot harder than you think because every woman has made these 10 makeup mistakes.

Makeup mistake #1: Foundation in a shade that’s too dark

A face as orange as a tangerine, in the 90s, that seemed to be the trend. The darker you were, the better. Foundation was a real must-have back then. The only thing women forgot was that it made the complexion a lot darker than the rest of the body. Luckily this trend has passed. We now realise that the shade of your foundation always has to match your complexion. When you buy your foundation, pay attention to the undertone of your skin. Just check if you have a warm or cool undertone and never choose a darker shade.

Makeup mistake #2: darker lipliner

Dark lipliner combined with a light colour lipstick: unfortunately, we still see women making this makeup mistake. You only use lipliner for your lipstick to stay on your lips, and that’s why you should never see lipliner on the lips. Preferably use your lipstick and lipliner in the same colour. Don’t only colour the edges of your lips with a lipliner! Colour your lips fully to get the most out of your lipstick.

Makeup mistake #3: Too much contouring

Too much is hardly ever a good idea, and this also goes for contouring. Applying heavy layers of contouring is a big makeup faux pas. Contouring can highlight parts of your face and cover other sections. It slims down your face and highlights your cheekbones if you don’t overdo your contouring products. Contouring itself is not a mistake, but when you use too much makeup when contouring, you get sharp angles that make you look harsh. You can also count on being called a ‘makeup head’, so keep it as natural as possible.

Makeup mistake #4: Unnatural brow line

Most eyebrows are not perfect by nature and although tweezing takes you a long way, many women draw on some hairs. Indeed, stick to just a few hairs in the natural brow line. Drawing Bert (from Ernie) eyebrows on is not a clever thing to do, and the ‘bow’ in your eyebrow doesn’t have to have a 90 degrees angle. When drawing on your eyebrows, just follow your natural shape and be your beautiful self.

Makeup mistake #5: Dirty makeup brushes

We often have a closet full of cleansing products, but forget that we have to clean our makeup brushes as well. It’s a typical job you postpone and never do. Besides dirty, this is also a makeup mistake. Bacteria are left behind in the hairs of your brushes. That increases the risk of getting acne and uneven skin. Just clean your brushes every two weeks using a separate brush cleanser or baby shampoo.

Makeup mistake #6: Going to bed with makeup still on

Tired, not in the mood, lots of excuses for you to go to bed with your makeup still on. Some women always come up with excuses not to clean their faces. Even if you only do this once in a while, it affects the condition of your skin. Just make sure you always, always, take off your makeup before you head to your bedroom.

Makeup mistake #7: Wrong occasion

You can’t only be overdressed in clothing; you can also wear too much makeup on some occasions. Really, you don’t have to wear a thick layer of makeup and false eyelashes to work. Match your makeup to the event; keep it nice and fresh for work, and go all out when you want to hit the clubs. Neutral shades are perfect to wear during the daytime, while darker shades go well with festive activities.

Makeup mistake #8: Don’t blend eyeshadow

When you wear eyeshadow but don’t blend it enough, you risk losing some eyeshadow as the day goes by. As gravity causes the excess shadow to fall down, the eyeshadow will end up between your lashes. It looks a bit funny, and there’s an easy solution to this makeup mistake. Just take a little more time to apply and blend your eyeshadow. This is how you make sure that no excess powder stays on your eyelids.

Makeup mistake #9: Matte lipstick on dry lips

Matte lipstick has been very trendy for a couple of years, and it has many benefits. Matte lipstick stays longer on your lips and doesn’t stain as much. There is one disadvantage, especially when you suffer from having dry lips. A matte lipstick doesn’t hydrate as a glossy lipstick does. When you already have dry lips, a matte lipstick will only accentuate this. Besides having your chapped lips highlighted, a matte lipstick will only dehydrate your lips even more.

Makeup mistake #10: Light concealer under your eyes

A makeup mistake many women make is wearing a lighter shade of concealer to hide dark circles under the eyes. Most of the time, it is advised to buy your concealer in a lighter shade, but it’s better not to do this when you have dark circles or bags under your eyes. The lighter shade only highlights your dark circles. It’s better to choose a concealer shade that matches your skin tone and foundation so that you cover your dark circles with an extra layer.
