High heels make you feel like a woman, boost your self-esteem, and for the shorter ladies: they add a couple of inches to your height. There is one downside: walking on high heels can be a struggle, and clumsiness is part of the job. Every woman knows how difficult it is to walk elegantly on high heels, so we collected 10 tips for you. Put on your high heels with confidence!

#1 Buy your high heels in the right size

Buying the right size applies to all shoes, but a correct fit is essential if you want to look elegant in your heels. Court shoes that are too small will squeeze your toes. Buy your heels too big will make you lose a shoe. Walking in heels is difficult enough as it is. Just make it easier on yourself by buying a good fitting shoe. You just have to pay attention to the size and if the shoe forms to your foot. All feet differ like everyone has a different body type.

#2 Practice makes perfect

You couldn’t ride your bicycle straight away when you learned to cycle, right? The same goes for walking in heels. You have to practice walking in heels. The most important thing is that you slowly build this up. Don’t start with stiletto heels, but start with a 2 to 3-inch heel. Try to practice your walking indoor since you encounter not many obstacles inside your home.

#3 Straight posture with high heels

Like your mum used to say when you were young: ‘keep your posture!'. And she had a point there. Keeping a straight posture is a lot better for your body and makes walking on high heels a lot easier. Do you find keeping a straight posture an impossible thing to do? Training your abdominal muscles will work!

#4 Choose chunky heels

Although we love stiletto heels, they are made for high heel experts. Even fashion models, and part of their job is to elegantly walk in all kinds of shoes, struggle with these thin heels. It’s best to opt for a chunky heel. A stiletto heel doesn’t give much stability, and chances are small that you can naturally walk in them. Chunky heels are just as sexy and feminine, but keep you firmly grounded.

#5 Buy your high heels at the end of the afternoon

Your feet swell during the day, and most shoes become tighter. You won’t notice this as much when you wear your boots, but unfortunately, you experience this with high heels on your feet. It’s best to try on a pair of high heels at the end of the afternoon. You immediately know if the shoes feel comfortable on your swollen feet.

#6 Tape your toes together

Most women swear by typing two toes together. It may sound a bit funny, but taping toes together reduces the risk of getting tired feet after a long day walking in heels. Go to your local pharmacist and buy some skin-coloured tape. Tape your third and fourth toe, counted from your big toe, together. You don’t have to use a lot of tape; it only takes a few pieces to tape your two toes together. Believe us: taping two toes together is like a magic wand!

#7 Take small steps

Taking big steps like you do when you wear your biker boots is not a good idea when you’re in heels. Taking huge steps on your high heels causes you to lose your balance and that just looks clumsy. Striding shorter than you usually do helps you keep your balance and feel confident.

#8 Sand your outsoles

Looking like Bambi on ice, that’s the last thing you want when you’re on heels. You must stand firm if you try to walk naturally. For extra grip, you can sand the soles of your shoes. Just a little sanding will do wonders and make you feel much more confident and comfortable.

#9 From heel to toe

We’ve all been there: after a long day of walking in your heels, the ball of your foot feels stiff. The result: sore feet. Leaning on the ball of your foot is one of the most common mistakes made by women in heels. When walking, try to put the heel of your foot down first and then unwind your foot to toes. High heels change the way we walk, but there’s nothing to worry about if you walk like you usually do. Stay calm and keep walking!

#10 Gel pads for high heels

Gel pads are a girl in heels’ best friend, especially when the shoe doesn’t have little cushions at the front foot or isn’t a platform shoe. Gel pads make walking in high heels a lot more comfortable. The more comfortable your shoes are, the more naturally you’ll walk in your heels.
