It all started with fun shirts and jumpers, but nowadays Colourful Rebel is a lot more serious. The trendy clothing is rapidly gaining international appreciation. Still a lot remains unknown about this brand. Therefore we collected 8 fun facts about Colourful Rebel that you probably didn’t know!

#1 Colourful Rebel was founded by a Dutch identical twin

The brothers Bas and Frank van der Brug were born only seven minutes after each other in Apeldoorn. Now they live and work in Amsterdam; Frank went to university in Amsterdam and Bas joined him after he graduated from Enschede University. Colourful Rebel is an Amsterdam born company and is proud to call itself a Dutch business.

#2 Both brothers worked at Scotch & Soda

After they graduated, both Bas and Frank started working at Scotch & Soda. At the end of 2012 the gentlemen were told that their contracts were terminated. They decided to have fun, travel and party. In the summer of 2013 the brothers founded Colourful Rebel.

#3 Colourful Rebel first started as a blog

It seems surreal, but in 2013 the brothers started the Colourful Rebel blog to share their amazing experiences with the world. In 2014, they added a web shop of only 4 Colourful Rebel T-shirts to the blog. Nobody expected that the T-shirts would be the must-haves of the 2010’s.

#4 The first web shop of Colourful Rebel was built with help from YouTube Tutorials

When the web shop was added to the popular blog in 2014, it started as a small web shop. On YouTube Frank and Bas viewed ‘how to build a…’ videos, added a payment system and started selling the 4 T-shirts. Nowadays, Colourful Rebel has a large collection of women’s clothing and a professional web shop.

#5 The most popular T-shirt is based on the brothers’ catchword

 Bas and Frank used the catchword ‘rascal’ for nearly everything. Even their girlfriends were nicked ‘rascal’. When the brothers were looking for a design to put on their shirts, Frank quickly wrote rascal in Dutch on a T-shirt. It became their trademark, but in 2016 Colourful Rebel decided to turn things around and to develop into a serious brand.

#6 The Colourful Rebel has a homey feel, including plenty of entertainment

The company premises is equipped with a pool table, PlayStation, table tennis, darts and punchbag for employees to escape the work stress. The office also has a relaxing sitting room and a cosy kitchen where great food is enjoyed.

#7 In 2018 Colourful Rebel collaborated with the Dutch singer Maan and launched a clothing collection

The Dutch singer often bought Colourful Rebel clothes and became friends with the owners Bas and Frank. Together they developed the collection MAAN X COLOURFUL REBEL, with the ‘Moonlight’ jumpers and ‘Bad Gils Club’ shirts as bestsellers.

#8 Colourful Rebel owners Bas and Frank don’t do crazy spending

With a turnover of millions a year you would think that the brothers own at least a very expensive car or do other crazy expenses. Nothing could be further from the truth, the twins only have one dream to ever purchase; the retirement of their parents.
