Watches come in all shapes, sizes, colours and price ranges. Some like to wear a trendy timepiece and prefer to buy a new one every year, while others love wearing a classic watch that will last for years. Whether you choose a fashionable watch or a more classical one, a watch always finishes your outfit. There are so many watches available, that choosing one can be a tricky business. Don’t worry, we are here to help! We have tips on how to choose a watch so you can purchase an amazing new timepiece that really suits you.

Which watch to wear to which occasion?

Obviously you wear a watch to check the time. However, a watch is more than a little gadget that shows what time it is. A watch is a piece of jewellery that finishes your outfit. First we advise you to consider to which occasions you’re going to wear a watch. Is it a casual watch to wear every day, or are you looking for an elegant and classic watch to wear to work? Once you know what you want to wear a watch to, choosing a watch becomes much easier.

Which watch suits my style?

To radiate or not to radiate, that’s the question. Do you love luxurious looks and are you willing to invest in a timepiece that will last a lifetime? Then high-end brands are an excellent choice. For the sporty ones among us who want to track their activities, a smartwatch is the best choice.

The colour of a watch: what suits my skin tone best?

Most stainless steel watches come in colours like gold, silver, rose gold or a combination of these. Not every colour suits every skin tone, but we have a quick and easy way to find out what colour suits you best.

  • Check whether your skin has a warm or cool undertone. You can do this by looking at colour of the veins on the inside of your wrist.
  • Blue or purple veins? Your skin has a cool undertone. Silver is your way to go!
  • Green veins? Your skin has a warm undertone. You look best in gold or rose gold.
  • Do your veins have both blue and green shades? Then you are a neutral type. You’re one of the lucky ones who look amazing in both gold and silver.

Which watch strap is right for me?

Watch straps are the cherry on the cake watch and allow you to vary your style. You can turn a cool watch into a more classic one by replacing the metal watch strap with a leather one. Or the other way around, if that’s what you prefer. Rubber watch straps are ideal if you’re into sports or a casual lifestyle, since rubber straps are easy to clean and add a sporty look to any watch. Whether you go for a metal, leather or rubber watch strap, be sure that you choose a strap that matches the colour of your watch.

What clockwork is best for me?

When choosing your new watch, there are plenty of clockworks that you have to take into account. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to clockworks! They are all perfect in their own way, so it’s best to choose one based on your preferences. The different clockworks:

  • Quartz clockwork: Quartz watches are perfect for people who like their convenience and just expect one thing from a watch: that it shows the correct time. All you have to do is replace the battery every now and then.
  • Automatic clockwork: If you prefer not to have a battery-powered watch, then an automatic watch is what you need. These watches wind themselves by the movements of your wrist. The downside is that your watch stops running if you don’t wear it every day, but a watchwinder easily solves this problem.
  • Solar clockworks: All you need is love light to make your watch run on time. The best part? It doesn’t matter if it is artificial or natural light!

What size watch should I get?

To determine the best size of your watch, it’s good to know your wrist circumference. You can easily measure this yourself. Wrap tape around your wrist and read the number of centimetres or inches. What size you need depends on your personal preferences. There is no law that tells you can’t wear oversized watches when you have narrow wrists. But choosing the right size can be tricky. To help you out, there are 4 categories of watch sizes.

  • Wrists with a maximum circumference of 15 cm are suitable for watches smaller than 35 mm.
  • Wrists with a maximum circumference between 15 and 17 cm work well with watches of 35-40 mm.
  • Wrists with circumference between 17 and 19 cm are perfect for watches between 41 and 46 mm.
  • Do you have wide wrists and does your wrist circumference measure more than 19 cm? Then go big, bigger, biggest with watches over 46 mm!

Which watch glass do I need?

The glass is the most essential part of your watch. In general: the harder the glass, the more expensive the watch. Sapphire glass cannot be broken and is the strongest and clearest glass on the market. Premium or luxury watches often have sapphire glass. Mineral glass is the most used glass for watches. It’s safe to assume that your watch has this glass. Just like sapphire glass, mineral glass doesn’t scratch. It may crack or break, but a good watchmaker can replace the glass. Inexpensive watches often have synthetic glass to protect the clockwork. Synthetic glasses are very flexible and almost unbreakable, but they are likely to get scratches. If you don’t mind a scratch here and there, then synthetic glasses are a perfect choice.

Final tip: now that you know how to choose a watch, you can start shopping. The perfect watch is a matter of taste and your perfect watch is the one that makes you happy every time you look at it.
