The sun’s shining, temperatures are tropical and you want to wear as little as possible. Hitting the streets in your birth suit is not an option, but which clothes are perfect to wear during a heatwave? Choosing what to wear is pretty difficult on its own, let alone when temperatures rise to over 85F. We are here to help you out; these clothes are best to wear in hot weather.

Material selection of clothing in hot weather

In the winter you probably like to wear woollen jumpers to keep yourself warm, in the summer you look for refreshing materials. We bet you already know that a leather skirt or a synthetic dress isn’t very comfortable to wear during the summer. Which materials are refreshing? Summer clothes made of these materials are perfect to wear in hot weather!

Cotton

Cotton clothing is one of the favourites to wear in hot weather. The fabric is known for its breathable effect and hardly catches any heat. It’s perfect to keep you cool on warm summer days. Another advantage: cotton draws moisture away and reduces the chance of getting those annoying sweat stains!

Linen

Linen is a true summer fabric and is very suitable to keep you cool. The material allows air to pass through and absorbs moisture. This makes linen the coolest material. Business suits for men and women are often made of linen, so can go to your office and be cool and comfortable. The only disadvantage of linen clothing is that it wrinkles quickly and needs to be ironed.

Silk

Luxurious silk garments, they may not be low-priced, but they are wonderfully refreshing in hot weather. This smooth, soft material gives you a dashing feeling and feels silky-smooth on the skin. Just make sure that you buy a true silk garment and not one that’s made of faux silk or synthetic fabric.

Which colours to wear in hot weather

Many people say that white and light clothes keep you cooler than dark colours like black and blue, but is this true? Opinions are more divided than railways on this issue!

According to a study of the Huntsman Cancer Institute of the University of Utah dark colours absorb more warmth than light colours. A white shirt is more refreshing, since white reflects sunlight. Also, bright coloured clothes keep the warmth at bay. A bright yellow shirt keeps you cooler than a light yellow shirt. For those who need an excuse to buy new clothes: an old shirt provides less protection than a new shirt. Happy shopping!

Another study states that it doesn’t matter if you wear light or dark colours. During the experiment, a man with a white garment on stood in the sun (with a temperature as high as 115F!) for half an hour. Then the same man put on a black garment and stood in the same sun for another thirty minutes. It turned out that the man got just as hot in the white and the black garment! According to this study there’s no difference in wearing black or white in hot weather. You can wear both colours carefree.

Perfect fit for hot weather

A pencil dress may look elegant, it’s not clever to put this on when temperatures rise. The fabric fits tight to the body and is therefore likely to stick. The result: excessive sweating and that’s anything but elegant! It’s best to keep all tight fitted clothes in your closet. Instead, opt for wide and refreshing clothes.

As little as possible or cover?

You may be tempted to wear as little as possible as soon as temperatures rise above 85F, but it’s better to cover your full body with light and refreshing clothes. We totally understand that you want to show off your beautiful sun-kissed legs, but your body warms itself as soon as the sun hits your skin. By covering up with (light) clothes you protect your skin and prevent your body temperature from rising.
