Picture this situation: you’re wearing a cute skirt, but as soon as you step out, you mimic the iconic Marilyn Monroe image of her dress flying up as she flushes to push it down. That dress-blowing moment made Marilyn a motion picture icon, but in everyday life you just show your knickers. You can opt for the easy way out and save yourself from embarrassing moments by putting on a pair of shorts, but sometimes you just don’t feel like wearing them. There is a practical solution to this problem: the skort. In this blog you read everything about the skort, its history and ways to wear it.

What is a skort

A skort is a garment that resembles a mini skirt, but it has divided legs that give you the ability to be more active. The skort is a combination of a short and a skirt. Traditionally the skort is short and makes everyone think that you’re wearing a skirt, but it gives you the benefits of the modest coverage provided by shorts. Female tennis players and hockey players wear skorts during games, but the garment has become very popular outside the courts. A skort is brilliant if you feel like wearing a skirt, but prefer to wear shorts for comfort. Wearing a mini skirt without your undies showing, what more could you ask for?! Another benefit: skorts elongate your legs, so show them off!

A short history of the skort

You may think that the skort is the new kid on the block when it comes to fashion, but nothing could be further from the truth. The first culotte, or long skort, was designed at the end of the nineteenth century. Back then, trousers were just for the boys -and men- and women were not allowed to wear them. Ladies were by no means allowed to look even slightly masculine! However, cycling -or playing other sports- with a skirt on was very uncomfortable and could even be dangerous. To help out the ladies, a combination of a skirt and trousers was designed, and the skort was born. These skorts didn’t look like the skorts we know today; the skorts were wide and came down to the ankles, whereas today’s skorts are much shorter and tighter.

In the 1960s, the hemline of dresses and skirts rose, and it was the decade of joie-de-vivre and mini skirts that were considered daring and revealing. The short hemlines were as stunning as they were uncomfortable, since women were always risking showing their drawers en plein publique. Fashion designers were inspired by sports fashion and the first skort, as we know it today, was a fact. From then on, skorts put a fresh and comfy twist on everyday wear.
