What is a blazer?

Time for some history 101: The term ‘blazers’ originated with the red flannel boating jackets, or ‘blazers’, of the rowing club of St. John’s College, Cambridge, the Lady Margaret Boat Club. These early blazers were like later sports jackets, but this term never referred to blazers. As late as 1837 the crew of HMS Blazer were dressed by their captain in in jackets of blue and white stripes. And what happened is history: the blazer entered the language.

Striped blazers became insanely popular among British mods in the 1960s. Bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and The Who had members wearing striped blazers or brightly coloured blazers. Many men wanted to look like their idols and adopted the blazer as a key piece, but it wasn’t until the late 00s that the blazer became fashionable amongst women. Compared to men, women’s blazers often have shorter lengths, rolled-up sleeves and various lapels.
